Are you embarking on your orthodontic journey with braces? Congratulations! At Jolley Orthodontics, our Smile Team is dedicated to helping you achieve a beautiful, healthy smile. Proper oral hygiene is essential when you have braces, as it ensures that your teeth remain healthy and your treatment progresses smoothly. In this blog, Dr. Jolley will provide you with valuable tips and techniques for brushing and flossing with braces so you can maintain your oral health with confidence.

Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin, make sure you have the right tools at hand. You'll need a soft-bristle toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste, dental floss, and possibly an orthodontic floss threader. If you prefer an electric toothbrush, choose one with a round brush head, as it's more effective at removing plaque around braces.

Brushing with Braces

  1. Start by rinsing your mouth with water to remove any loose debris.

  2. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and gently brush your teeth and braces using small circular motions.

  3. Pay special attention to cleaning around the brackets and wires, ensuring you reach every nook and cranny.

  4. Brush each tooth for at least 10 seconds, and don't forget to brush your gums and tongue for a complete clean.

  5. Be gentle to avoid damaging your braces or irritating your gums.

Flossing with Braces

  1. Flossing can be a bit more challenging with braces, but it's just as crucial. If you have a floss threader, use it to guide the floss under the wires.

  2. Gently floss between your teeth and around your braces to remove food particles and plaque.

  3. Don't rush – take your time to ensure a thorough clean. It might take a little longer, but it's worth it for your oral health.

Rinse and Inspect

After brushing and flossing, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water to remove any remaining debris and toothpaste. Take a moment to inspect your teeth and braces in the mirror. Ensure that there are no leftover food particles or signs of plaque buildup. If needed, make a few extra passes with your toothbrush or floss.

Regular Dental Check-Ups

While maintaining good oral hygiene at home is essential, don't forget to keep up with your regular dental check-ups. Visit Jolley Orthodontics as recommended for routine adjustments and see your dentist for professional cleanings at least twice per year. They can spot any issues early and provide guidance to ensure your oral health during your orthodontic treatment. We are happy to work with your dentist to keep your teeth as healthy as possible.
